Anderson welcomes call for GFA and rights to be safeguarded
Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has welcomed a call from the European Parliament's Brexit co-ordinator for the Good Friday Agreement and the rights it contains to be safeguarded.
Martina Anderson said:
"I welcome the call from the European Parliament's Brexit co-ordinator, Guy Verhofstadt, to the EU's lead Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier, calling for the Good Friday Agreement and the rights it contains to be protected.
"In a letter to Mr Barnier, Guy Verhofstadt has said he expects the full set of rights contained in the Good Friday Agreement and underpinned by EU law to be safeguarded and accessible to citizens in the north.
"This now forms part of the criteria by which the European Parliament will assess the final withdrawal agreement.
"It also reinforces the clear message sent by the European Parliament this week that there can be no diminution of rights, including democratic rights, as a result of Brexit.
"It is clear that there is growing support across the EU for the case we have been putting forward for the north to secure special status within the EU.
"It is now up to the Irish government to work to ensure there is no regression on rights and for the British government to put forward concrete proposals to give legal effect to what has already been agreed."
