McDonald ‘taken aback and concerned’ by Taoiseach’s comments regarding planning intervention on behalf of Donald Trump
Sinn Féin Leader Mary Lou McDonald TD has said that she is “taken aback and concerned” by the Taoiseach's revelation that he contacted Clare County Council on behalf of the now President of the United States Donald Trump who was unhappy about a proposal for a windfarm close to Mr Trump’s golf course in Doonbeg.
Speaking from the United States this evening, Teachta McDonald said:
“The Taoiseach must clarify his actions and the appropriateness of his intervention on this planning issue.
“Mr Varadkar says he took a phone call from Mr Trump and subsequently contacted Clare County Council.
“This sequence events raises serious concerns regarding the propriety of the Taoiseach’s actions as he was a Government Minister at the time.
“It would be wholly unacceptable, and extremely serious, for a Government Minister to have sought to influence the decision of a local authority on a planning application.
“I would urge an Taoiseach to now give a full explanation of his actions regarding this matter.”
