British government must bring forward credible border solution – David Cullinane TD
Sinn Féin Brexit spokesperson David Cullinane TD has said the British Government must bring forward a credible solution to safeguard rights of citizens’ in the North.
Speaking today, Teachta Cullinane said;
“The recent publication of the Westminster select committee highlights the concerns being raised repeatedly by a wide variety across the public which shows that the British Government is completely unprepared for Brexit.
“With the Brexit deadline quickly approaching, the British Government must put forward a credible solution for the border.
“The only way to guarantee these rights and the economic security of Ireland as an island is to secure designated special status for the North within the European Union.
"The draft Withdrawal Treaty has a solution within it which would see the North of Ireland remain within elements of the single market and the customs union.
"The British government accepted and agreed to that position in December and now they must work to ensure that this position that is secured.
“Any border, hard or soft, must be avoided on the island of Ireland in order to protect the Good Friday Agreement, the rights of citizens in the North and to protect trade."
