Taoiseach must appear before PAC to answer question on SCU – Doherty
Sinn Féin TD and deputy Dáil Leader Pearse Doherty has called on an Taoiseach Leo Varadkar to appear before the Public Accounts Committee to answer questions on the Strategic Communications Unit, specifically to account for the spending of public money on his vanity project.
Speaking on the Sinn Féin PMB on disbanding the unit this afternoon, the Donegal TD said:
“At its core, the motion is about accountability. Sinn Féin stand for accountability, something that is sorely lacking in this State.
“Assurances were given that the SCU would be completely free from any and all government influence, yet media reports over the last number of weeks have poured cold water on this.
“Not only do the actions of the SCU amount to an abuse of power, and raise a number of very serious questions around the moral and ethical behaviour of those involved, it represents a shameful misuse of the public purse.
“There is an addiction to spin at the heart of this Varadkar government.
“Let’s put an end to what has been a shameful, callous, and deceitful propaganda project.
“This is why I am calling on all sides to accept this motion so that we may move on and restore some of the faith which has been lost in politics over this botched Fine Gael experiment in self-promotion and so that we can get on with the real issues, such as health, housing and homelessness, which continue to affect the lives of those we are here to represent.”
