Anderson welcomes MEP fact-finding delegation to the north

21 March, 2018 - by Martina Anderson MEP

Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has welcomed a visit by fellow members of the European Parliament's Regional Development Committee to the north on a three-day fact-finding mission.

Speaking on the first day of the visit by the European Parliament's Regional Development Committee, Martina Anderson said:

"Members of the European Parliament's regional development committee began a three-day fact-finding visit to the north today to look at the impact of EU regional development funding in the north.

"The visit will include engagements in Derry and Belfast and meetings with a range of bodies and organisations that have benefited from EU funding.

"In Belfast today the delegation will meet with the office of the European Commission before meeting with the Victims and Survivors Service to discuss how EU funding has assisted their work in dealing with victims and survivors of the conflict.

"We will also visit the Skainos Centre in east Belfast, which will allow the MEPs to look at the impact of EU funding on cross-community and Irish language projects before visiting the Girdwood Community Hub in north Belfast, a shared space funded by the EU developed on a former British military site.

"It is vitally important that MEPs get this opportunity to see at first hand the impact and importance of EU funding to the north, particularly in the context of Brexit.

"I have no doubt that their experience here will reinforce the prevailing view in the European Parliament that special status for the north within the EU is required."
