‘Unionist parties want Brexit at any cost’ - Canavan
Sinn Féin Councillor Claire Canavan has welcomed Belfast City Council’s decision to establish a standing committee to examine the impact of Brexit but strongly criticised the unionist parties for opposing the move.
Cllr. Canavan commented: “I am glad that my motion to establish this committee was passed with the support of the SDLP and Alliance Party.
“The committee will explore the impact of Brexit on the Belfast City Council area so that we can take an evidence-based and informed approach to the impact it will undoubtedly have.
“That is an entirely sensible approach for any local authority to take when confronted with something as momentous as Brexit and the negative consequences which we already know it will have on our economy and communities.
“However, the fact that all the unionist parties opposed its establishment is extremely concerning.
"It would seem that these parties simply want Brexit at any cost, regardless of the impact on lives of citizens or the fact that the majority of people here opposed it in the first place.”
