David Cullinane TD welcomes British Labour Party commitment to translate backstop Agreement into legal text
Sinn Féin spokesperson on Brexit, David Cullinane TD has this evening welcomed a commitment from the British Labour Party to rewrite Brexit Legislation currently going through the British Parliament to enshrine in law the political commitment made at the end of last year to avoid a hard border.
Speaking this evening Deputy Cullinane said:
“I welcome this move by the British Labour Party and their efforts to enshrine in legislation the political agreement reached last year on protecting the Good Friday Agreement and avoiding a hard border in Ireland.
“To date the Tory Party has been speaking from both sides of their mouths. They say they want to avoid an EU border in Ireland but they are intent on taking the North out of the Customs Union and Single Market.
"They say they support a backstop arrangement for Ireland but not the backstop arrangement agreed.
“Earlier this month the EU brought forward a legal text to translate the political agreement between the British Government and the EU into a legal format. This was rejected out of hand by British Prime Minister Theresa May.
“The Tories can no longer be allowed to drag their feet and avoid their responsibilities in protecting the GFA and avoiding a hard border in Ireland.
"This move by the British Labour Party forces Theresa May’s hand and is to be welcomed. The doublespeak from the Tories must be challenged in Ireland, in Britain and by the EU.”
