Anderson calls for charges against Carles Puidgemont to be dropped
Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has called for all charges against former Catalan President Carles Puidgemont to be dropped.
Martina Anderson said:
"The arrest and detention of Carles Puidgemont in Germany is wrong and is an affront to democracy.
"His arrest and the charges that have been put to him have sparked widespread anger throughout Catalonia where the majority of people voted for Catalan independence.
"He should be released immediately and all charges against him withdrawn to allow him to return to Catalonia free from fear of arrest.
"All charges against other Catalan leaders who called on people to exercise their democratic right to vote should also be dropped.
"A process of genuine and inclusive negotiations between the Spanish government and Catalan leaders to find a peaceful and sustainable solution which recognises the independence vote."
