'Boundary Commission cannot ignore overwhelming opposition’ - Gildernew
The Boundary Commission cannot ignore the overwhelming extent of opposition which has now been formally lodged against controversial plans to redraw electoral boundaries, Sinn Féin MLA Colm Gildernew has said.
The Fermanagh South Tyrone MLA commented: “The consultation process on the revised Boundary Commission plans has now closed and I would like to thank everyone who made a submission over the past number of weeks.
“I am aware that at least 5,000 submissions have been made strongly objecting to proposed new boundaries.
“Sinn Féin is not surprised at such an overwhelming response given the anger that has been palpable within the nationalist community. Our offices have been inundated with voters furious at what they see as an attempt to gerrymander electoral boundaries, given that the plans would see at least four constituencies left with no nationalist representative whatsoever.
“It is now down to the Boundary Commission to take those arguments on board. They cannot ignore such overwhelming opposition and we expect them to revise their plans in line with their remit to distribute the electorate in a fair and equitable way across the new constituencies.”
