Sinn Féin welcomes publication of abortion legislative framework
Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald TD has welcomed the publication today of the draft heads of legislation to allow for abortion in certain circumstance if the 8th Amendment is removed from the Constitution in the upcoming referendum.
Teachta McDonald said the legislation is in line with the position of the Sinn Féin Ard Comhairle and is the position which will be put to the party’s Ard Fheis in June.
Speaking from Leinster House today, Teachta McDonald said;
“We welcome the publication of this Bill. It is in line with the position adopted by the Sinn Féin Ard Comhairle earlier this month and with the motion that we will put to our Ard Fheis in June.
“It is important now the government confirms the date for the referendum so that we can get on with the campaign to remove the 8th Amendment.
“It is important that the public have a sense of what will come before the Oireachtas in the event of the 8th Amendment being removed and in that sense today’s publication is very welcome.
“However, the legislation cannot come before the Oireachtas unless we first remove the 8th Amendment and therefore it is now important that all those who want to see this happen put their shoulder to the wheel in this campaign in order to get the right result.
“Women have waited too long for this opportunity. We cannot let it pass us by. It is time to trust women and remove the 8th Amendment.”
