Pay equality for teachers must be addressed – Jonathan O’Brien TD

3 April, 2018 - by Jonathan O'Brien TD

Sinn Féin’s Junior Finance spokesperson Jonathan O’Brien has said the government must commit to addressing pay equality for teachers in the next budget.

Speaking today as the annual teachers union conferences got underway, Teachta O’Brien said;

“Sinn Féin supports teachers in their call for equal pay for equal work.

“The issue of restoring the public service to a single-tier pay structure is a red line issue for Sinn Féin.

“It is a source of great inequality and disruption that must be ended once and for all.

“Sinn Féin provided for the process of pay equality in our alternative budget.“It is an issue that must be rectified as soon as possible. It cannot be dragged out over years.

“Sinn Féin opposed the lower pay scales when they were imposed by the government and have vigorously held successive governments to account on this issue since.

“The issue of equal pay for equal work must be a priority for Minister Donohoe come the next budget and he should give a commitment that it will be.”
