Funchion welcomes relationship and sex education curriculum review
Sinn Féin spokesperson for Education Kathleen Funchion TD has welcomed the announcement by the Minister for Education and Skills Richard Bruton that a review of the current RSE curriculum would be carried out by the NCCA.
Teachta Funchion said:
“I welcome the news of the review of RSE this morning. It has been 20 years since the curriculum of relationship and sex education has seen any change.
“The Citizen’s Assembly and the Joint Oireachtas Committee on the 8th Amendment both recommended that improvements be made in the sexual health and relationship education in schools, including the areas of contraception and consent.
“Things have changed substantially since the 1990’s in Ireland and this needs to be reflected in our children’s education.
“It is important that our children are all taught about consent from a young age now that we have a legal definition of consent as a framework.
“Boys and girls, men and women need to understand consent as both genders give and receive consent.
“Through RSE, young people should have the knowledge they need to engage in safe and consensual relationships.
“The review by the NCCA will be carried out in consultation with teachers, students, principals, and parents.
“It is really important that parents are included in the consultation process so that they can be involved in their children’s education in this area.
“It is essential for the curriculum to be delivered by teachers who are fully supported and who feel comfortable teaching the curriculum and talking to their students about sexuality and relationships.”
