Anderson to host Good Friday Agreement event in Brussels tomorrow
Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson will host a delegation in Brussels tomorrow for an event marking the 20th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement.
Martina Anderon said:
"Tomorrow I will be hosting an event in the European Parliament in Brussels to mark the 20th anniversary of the signing of the Good Friday Agreement.
"The theme of the event will be the unfinished business of the Good Friday Agreement and the need for it to be fully implemented as well as protected from Brexit.
"As part of the event, Sinn Féin MP and former minister Michelle Gildernew will be making a keynote address in the European Parliament on the continuing legacy of the Good Friday Agreement, the ongoing role the EU plays in supporting our peace process and the threat posed to the Agreement by Brexit.
"The event will also include a photographic exhibition in the European Parliament of the events leading up to and surrounding the signing of the Good Friday Agreement.
"The delegation will include Sinn Féin representatives, representatives of the unionist community including former deputy leader of the Ulster Unionist Party John McCallister, and individuals from bodies set up under the Good Friday Agreement.
"The Good Friday Agreement is not just a historic document and should not be regarded as such. It is currently under threat from Brexit and the policies of the Tories and DUP and must be protected.
"The EU have made it clear in successive resolutions and agreements that it values the Good Friday Agreement and hat it must be protected in all its parts.
"The best way to do that is through securing special status for the north within the EU and that is what we are working to secure."
