Gildernew welcomes withdrawal of Ashbrooke appeal

17 April, 2018 - by Colm Gildernew

Sinn Féin spokesperson for Carers Colm Gildernew MLA has welcomed confirmation that an appeal against the decision to close Ashbrooke care home in Enniskillen over safety fears has been dropped.

The Fermanagh South Tyrone was speaking after the Regulation and Quality Improvement Authority (RQIA) confirmed that Runwood Homes Ltd has now withdrawn its appeal.

“This has been a deeply challenging and concerning time for residents and their families so we welcome this update on the appeal,” he said.

“The inspection report last August raised some serious concerns which needed to be addressed. The decision to close and make an enforcement decision doesn’t come lightly from the regulator so it was clear that there were serious concerns. Some of the issues raised by the inspection related to 'systemic care failings and concerns in relation to the management of the home’. It is just a pity that it has taken over seven months for us to get to this stage. It would have been better if that time had been used addressing the problems rather than pursuing an appeal.

“Sinn Féin believe that quality care and high standards are essential for residents, their families as well as the staff who work in the caring sector. High standards benefits everyone and should be something we all strive for.

“We know that it has been extremely challenging for the residents, the families and all those involved but the immediate and long term care and safety of the residents must be our priority.”
