Senator Conway-Walsh demands Ministerial accountability on Regional Transport Network
Mayo Sinn Féin Senator Rose Conway-Walsh has this week has called on the Minister for Transport to come to the Seanad to discuss the urgent need to maintain Bus Éireann Route 52 which connects North-West Mayo and Ballina with Galway. Senator Conway-Walsh is also demanding a full debate on accountability within the regional transport network.
Speaking in the Seanad, Senator Conway-Walsh said:
“There is currently a review underway of the operation of Route 52. I want the Minister for Transport to come before the Seanad to debate the level of accountability in the provision of a proper regional transport network to serve the needs of people in Mayo and Rural Ireland.
"In particular, I want Minister Ross to understand that it is completely unacceptable that a route as vital as route 52 could be axed or altered. He needs to know that for many people this is the only suitable link between North Mayo and Galway Hospitals.
"It is not good enough for the Minister to say he has no official responsibility in the matter. What is the point of having a Minister for Transport if he then washes his hands of how the agencies and services that operate our transport system work?
"Making decisions to withdraw or alter services without consultation with local areas is not acceptable. We firstly need clarity and then assurances for all those for whom route 52 is vital."
