Martin Kenny TD welcomes delisting of Brazilian meat plants as European suppliers
Sinn Féin’s agricultural spokesman, Martin Kenny TD, today welcomed the unanimous decision of the European Commission to remove 20 Brazilian meat and poultry plants from the EU’s list of authorised suppliers.
Deputy Kenny said:
“This delisting has come on the back of a huge scandal in Brazil relating to food safety in various plants.
“This is a welcome move, but begs the question if other plants and countries, in that region, are meeting adequate food safety standards and if the European consumer is adequately protected.
“This is a warning to those engaged in Mercosur negotiations of the risks of inadequate standards in food imports to Europe.”
