Gildernew welcomes 'wet weather payments'
Sinn Féin MP for Fermanagh and South Tyrone Michelle Gildernew has today welcomed the decision to compensate farmers for losses to production and increased costs due to inclement weather conditions across the north in 2002. Ms Gildernew said that Sinn Féin had 'lobbied hard on this issue'.
Ms Gildernew made her comments after Agriculture Minister Jeff Rooker announced a weather aid package for farmers in the Six Counties worth £4.6million.
Ms Gildernew said:
"I want to welcome Jeff Rooker's plan to compensate farmers through a payment scheme for inclement weather in 2002. Sinn Féin had lobbied hard at local and European levels to ensure farmers where reimbursed due to loss of production and increased costs and I am pleased that this is now the case.
"At a time when farming incomes, north and south, are lower now than they have been in a decade, this will come as a welcome boost for the sector." ENDS
