UTV apologise to Sinn Féin MLA
West Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Michael Ferguson received a television apology from UTV following a news report this week that claimed that he had told people not to bring forward evidence to the PSNI following the horrendous rape of a 15-year-old girl. Michael who had been working closely with families of the victims was horrified by the UTV claim and immediately instigated legal action through the offices of Madden & Finucane Solicitors.
Letita Gwynne made the offensive statement in an interview with Eileen Calder from the Rape Crisis Centre. The following statement was issued by Michael Ferguson following Friday Night's UTV apology.
(Statement to be carried in full)
"I welcome the UTV apology for what was an appalling piece of journalism that reflected poorly on the entire profession. Sinn Féin's focus from the outset was to see the perpetrators of this horrendous crime brought before the courts. I pursued this matter not simply because of the slight on my Party or myself but because it was essential that the community brought forth the information to ensure those responsible were caught, the victims received justice and this process could have been hindered."
