Irish government must protect democratic rights of people in the north - Anderson
Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has called on the Irish government to set out how democratic rights of Irish citizens in the north can be protected post-Brexit.
Martina Anderson said:
"Today in Brussels I asked the European Parliament's Brexit Co-ordinator, Guy Verhofstadt, about how the fundamental democratic rights of Irish citizens living in the north to directly elect representatives to the European Parliament.
"He said it is a matter for the Irish government so there is now a responsibility on the Taoiseach and the Irish government to outline exactly how they will ensure those rights are respected.
"The Irish government should now set out how it will live up to its pledge that no Irish citizens in the north will be left behind by an Irish government again.
"There is no legal barrier to Irish citizens in the north being able to elect a representative to the European Parliament standing in the south post-Brexit."
