HSE must explain cervical check circular - David Cullinane TD
Sinn Féin member of the Public Accounts Committee, David Cullinane has said today that the HSE has to explain why CervicalCheck issued a circular that gave doctors discretion.
"Today I called on CervicalCheck and the HSE to appear before the PAC to discuss the issue of failures in screenings of women for cervical cancer and I am glad to say the Committee members agreed with me.
"The issue at hand is a circular issued in July 2016 that advised the consultants of the women affected on how to deal with the issue of the failings,
"The circular said that it was up to the doctors to exercise their “judgment” on whether to tell them about the misdiagnosis.
"It then went on to say that, and I quote, 'In cases where a woman has died, simply ensure the result is recorded in the woman’s notes.'
"This is chilling. The message sent out today is that if you are a women and you have been misdiagnosed after a cervical check your doctor may or may not tell you.
"This is incredible that individual discretion was the response of a HSE-funded organisation to a systems failure.
"It is one that CervicalCheck and the HSE have to explain when they appear before the PAC on foot of my call for their attendance."
