Sheehan welcomes RCEM report

26 April, 2018 - by Pat Sheehan

Sinn Féin spokesperson for Health Pat Sheehan MLA has said today's report from the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM) emphasises again the need to support the workforce to deliver a high standard of front-line services.

Speaking after RCEM published its report which surveyed over 70% of Emergency Department (ED) consultants in the north, the West Belfast MLA commented: "Workforce shortages continue to be a fundamental problem facing the health system.

"Although this report focuses specifically on Emergency Medicine and the situation in EDs across the north, workforce shortages is an issue affecting services right across the health and social care (HSC) system.

"Despite the commitment and dedication of HSC staff who continue to deliver a high standard of care in very challenging circumstances its clear workforce shortages are having an impact.

"Today's release of ED Waiting Times show a growing increase in patients having to wait longer than 12 hours.

"This is unacceptable.

"The stress and frustration being experienced by HSC staff is also negatively affecting their well-being and morale.

"The department needs to step up staff recruitment and retention efforts in the short-term and publish the long-awaited workforce strategy that will plan for a sustainable HSC workforce going forward."
