Kathleen Funchion TD welcomes announcement of no student loans
Sinn Féin spokesperson for Education, Kathleen Funchion TD, today welcomed the announcement by the Minister that student loans will not be introduced as a method of funding higher education.
Teachta Funchion said:
“I welcome this announcement by Minister Mitchell O’Connor’s announcement.
“The introduction of student loans to fund the higher education sector in this country would make higher education inaccessible to many students.
“It would only serve to increase the barriers disadvantaged students face in accessing third level education.
“The Cassell’s report has provided a comprehensive analysis of funding options for third level education, perhaps the Government parties need to look at how they are going to fund one of the other two options instead of investing in carrying out further analysis.
“There is also the issue of student loans not being introduced in the lifetime of the current Government.
“The Minister needs to clarify if this also applies following a possible extension of the current supply and demand agreement with Fianna Fáil.
“Students have suffered greatly with cuts to grants, increases in student contribution and cuts to colleges since 2011, with no sign of any changes to this and to implement a student loan system would only place them in a situation of debt starting out in their careers."
