Flynn re-elected Chair of suicide prevention group
West Belfast MLA Sinn Féin MLA Orlaithí Flynn has been re-elected Chair of the Assembly’s All-Party Group on suicide Prevention.
Thanking members for their support at the latest meeting of the All-Party Group, Orlaithí Flynn said:
“At the meeting the Public Health Agency provided an update on their consultation on the Protect Life 2 strategy. There was a good discussion and insight into the issues raised during the consultation process especially from the community and voluntary groups.
“Professor Siobhan O’Neill from the University of Ulster gave an update on recent research on mental health rates within our student population. The fact that discrimination against LGB&T people, such as denying marriage equality, contributes to mental ill health was a serious wake up call.
“We also had an update on the Lifeline service which transitions over to the Belfast Trust. It was a difficult time but most importantly there was no difference experienced by those in crisis using the service.
“As Chair I am encouraged by the plans to improve our approach to suicide prevention and I look forward to progressing these plans with other MLAs and importantly all the groups and organisations involved in suicide prevention.”
