Cost of sending HSC staff to International conference 'unacceptable' - Sheehan

3 May, 2018 - by Pat Sheehan

Sinn Féin Health spokesperson Pat Sheehan has said the cost of sending around 100 staff to the International Forum on Quality and Safety in Healthcare in Amsterdam is unacceptable.

The West Belfast MLA said:

“The number of staff from the north attending the conference is excessive, particularly considering the budgetary pressures facing the Health and Social Care (HSC) service.

“Due to Tory austerity measures, which have resulted in continuous cuts to the block grant, the health budget is £160million short of what is needed to maintain the current level of HSC services.

“Transformation, education and innovation are essential to improving our health services and it is right that HSC staff are involved in such forums to learn best practice from across the world.

“However, sending around 100 HSC staff to a single conference is disproportionate.

“Health Trusts need to explain what alternatives were explored in taking learning from this conference and ensuring value for money.”
