'No more delays, no more excuses' - O'Neill
Six weeks on from a landmark court ruling, Sinn Féin Deputy Leader Michelle O’Neill has said there can be ‘no more delays and no more excuses’ preventing the release of funding for legacy inquests.
Commenting ahead of meeting with the Department of Justice tomorrow, Michelle O’Neill said: “I will be meeting the department to ascertain what progress they have made in implementing the High Court ruling in March.
“That judgement was explicit in ordering the British Secretary of State, the Executive Office and the Department of Justice to reconsider the refusal to provide the funding and to take steps to ensure that legacy inquests take place.
“The Court also awarded personal liability costs against former First Minister Arlene Foster having previously ruled that she acted unlawfully by blocking the Executive from considering the Lord Chief Justice’s request for the funds.
“That must end now. Legacy inquest funding has been blocked by the DUP and British Government for far too long. Grieving families have been denied truth and justice for too long. The Lord Chief Justice has been snubbed for too long.
“There can be no more delays and no more excuses.
“Some families have been waiting half a century for the basic right of a proper inquest into the death of their loved ones. That is wrong. That is unjustifiable and the funds to conduct the inquests should now be immediately released.”
