Self-regulation from Facebook is no alternative to robust legislation – Lynn Boylan MEP
Sinn Féin MEP for Dublin Lynn Boylan has welcomed the news that Facebook are no longer accepting adverts related to the Eighth Amendment referendum if they are based outside Ireland but believes robust government legislation is needed.
Speaking today following the announcement, Ms. Boylan said:
“ I spoke on this issue in the European Parliament on World Press Freedom Day and welcome today’s news that Facebook is no longer accepting adverts related to the upcoming referendum from outside of Ireland as a short term measure in the absence of robust legislation.
“While we have strong rules around campaign finance in Ireland, no such rules exist in the digital world. People who are trying to influence the outcome of referendums from outside the country are a threat to our democracy.
“ In the long term the Government must regulate these platforms opposed to the current self-regulatory model. We should not let social media giants off the hook as these platforms cannot regulate themselves. Google must follow-suit with similar restrictions with regard to advertising on its YouTube channel.”
