Sinn Féin welcomes decision by Director-General of HSE to stand down
Speaking this evening, Sinn Féin Health spokesperson Louise O’Reilly TD has welcomed the decision of the Director-General of the HSE, Tony O’Brien, to stand down from his position.
Teachta O’Reilly said:
“I welcome the decision taken by Mr O’Brien to stand down as DG of the HSE. Sinn Féin has maintained that Mr O’Brien’s position was untenable due to his failure to address the shortcomings of the HSE throughout the CervicalCheck scandal.
“The only way to begin to restore confidence in the cervical screening service, and the health service in general, was for Mr O’Brien to stand down. We believe the job ahead now, for the HSE and for politicians, is to get to the bottom of the CervicalCheck scandal and to restore confidence in the health service.
“I would like to commend the women affected who came forward and shared their stories. Ultimately, it was they, and not this government, who ensured some accountability in this scandal.”
