Sinn Féin meet with National Deaf Children’s Society

14 May, 2018 - by Catherine Kelly

Sinn Féin spokesperson for children and young people Catherine Kelly MLA met with the National Deaf Children’s Society on a range of issues this morning.

Catherine Kelly said:

"It was extremely important to engage with the National Deaf Children’s Society this morning and especially at the start of Deaf Awareness week.

"There are many issues that are affecting children and young people who are deaf. We must ensure there is a specific framework put in place to help those who are deaf within society. There should an introduction of a sign language Act that gives those who are deaf the same rights as other citizens.

"Mental health was another issue that came up in regards to children and young people who are deaf. It is imperative that specialist help is available specific to deaf people who are suffering from mental health problems.

"It is important that all children and young people have the opportunity to learn sign language. It is our view along with many others that sign language should be available to learn within a school environment."
