Sinn Féin welcomes publication of general scheme of Residential Tenancies (Amendment) Bill 2018 – Ó Broin

14 May, 2018 - by Eoin Ó Broin TD

Sinn Féin Housing spokesperson Eoin Ó Broin TD has welcomed the publication of the general scheme of the Residential Tenancies (Amendment) Bill 2018. The Bill has the potential, if properly drafted, to strengthen enforcement around breaches of the rent pressure zone (RPZ) legislation.

Deputy Ó Broin said:

“We welcome the publication of the general scheme of this Bill, which will give greater protections to tenants living in RPZs by making it an office for landlords to increase rents above the 4% cap. It is also important that the Residential Tenancies Board be given real power and resources to police this change.

“However, we will be urging the Minister to amend his proposals outlined in his letter to the Housing Committee to include student specific accommodation within the rent pressure zone legislation.

“Students living in student specific accommodation under license agreements should be included under the rent pressure zone legislation.

“Currently, there is a great deal of uncertainty around this and students and their parents need clarity before the next academic term.

“We will be contacting the Minister for Housing directly on this issue outlining why these changes are urgently required to be included in this new Bill.”
