Committee of Experts visit a timely reminder of need for an Acht Gaeilge - Ó Donnghaile
Commenting on the visit to the North by the European Committee of Experts, Sinn Féin Senator Niall Ó Donnghaile again called for the implementation of an Acht Gaeilge.
Commenting from Belfast, where the Committee spent the day, Seanadóir Ó Donnghaile said;
“The Committee of Experts are tasked with evaluating member states’ fulfilment of their responsibilities to language communities and the implementation of the European Charter for Regional and Minority Languages,
“I welcome the visit from their delegation. In recent years their reports have been consistent in their criticism of the lack of legislative implementation here that enshrines the rights of Irish language speakers.
“The Committee’s experience of international best practice all point clearly to the need for rights-based legislation there which protects, promotes and develops the Irish as well as other minority languages.
“I have no doubt they will again be impressed with the vibrancy of the Irish Medium sector and no doubt outline once again the necessity of freestanding legislation.
“It is long past time that the rights of Irish speakers in the north were given the protection they are entitled to and that an Acht Gaeilge is implemented without any further delay.”
