Ó Donnghaile welcomes Committee of Experts call for Acht Gaeilge
Sinn Féin Senator Niall Ó Donnghaile has welcomed calls from the European Committee of Experts, for the implementation of an Acht Gaeilge.
Seanadóir Ó Donnghaile said:
“I welcome the call from the Committee of Experts for the implementation of an Acht Gaeilge.
“Committee of Experts have a duty to evaluate member states’ fulfilment of their responsibilities to language communities and the implementation of the European Charter for Regional and Minority Languages.
“In recent years their reports have been consistent in their criticism of the lack of legislative implementation here that enshrines the rights of Irish language speakers.
“I am at all surprised by their call given all the international evidence and best practice pointing to societies being better off when they enshrine rights for minority language speakers which all point clearly to the need for rights-based legislation which protects, promotes and develops the Irish as well as other minority languages.
“The rights of Irish speakers in the north should be given the protection they are entitled to and an Acht Gaeilge must be implemented without any further delay.”
