Irish Government must insist on backstop agreement in June - David Cullianane TD
David Cullinane TD, Sinn Féin spokesperson for Brexit, has said today that Theresa May needs a wake-up call on Brexit and the north, and that the EU summit in June must serve that purpose.
Deputy Cullinane said:
"This week the EU firmly rejected Britain's proposed backstop arrangement for the north.
"Despite the December joint report and March agreement it appears we are still no closer to an actual legal framework for the north post-Brexit.
"Britain will leave the EU in ten months' time - with a workable plan in place by October of this year.
"This is all the more reason for real progress on the issue in time for the June EU summit.
"Time is being lost by bickering and division in the Tory party.
"Theresa May's 'new thinking' is a repackaging of fantasy proposals on bar-codes and cameras.
"The British need to get real - the Irish government needs to hold firm."
