Repeal of 8th Amendment is only way to deal with ‘hard cases’ – Denise Mitchell TD

Sinn Féin Dublin Bay North TD Denise Mitchell has said a Yes vote is required in order to help women who are seeking a termination because they became pregnant as a result of rape and for those who have received a diagnosis of fatal foetal abnormality.

Speaking while canvassing for a Yes vote on Wednesday, Deputy Mitchell said:

“For too long the 8th Amendment has been harming women in this State.

"Not only does it add to the devastating psychological pain of those who have received a diagnosis of fatal foetal abnormality and are forced to travel, but it also adds to the distress of rape victims who become pregnant by denying them medical care in their own state.

“Irish people are no longer prepared to stand over a system which punishes women who find themselves in such tragic circumstances.

"Despite the claims by the No side, the reality is that the only way such situations can be addressed is by repealing the 8th Amendment. That is a fact.”

Deputy Mitchell added that abortion is already a reality in Ireland, but a choice must be made:

“Irish women in crisis situations are ordering abortion pills online and taking them in their own bedroom and bathroom without any medical supervision.

"Abortion is already a reality in Ireland, so we need to make a choice as to whether we want to regulate it, make it safe and care for women.”

Deputy Mitchell said it was important people came out to vote on May 25th:

“I want to urge citizens to come out and vote on Friday and in particular I ask citizens to trust women and vote to repeal the 8th Amendment.”
