25 May, 2018 - by Caoimhe Archibald

Sinn Féin MLA Caoimhe Archibald has said more needs to be done to bring women and girls in careers in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).The East Derry MLA was speaking after a report showed this week that there has been no rise in the numbers of women and girls employed in STEM roles since 2008.The Sinn Féin spokesperson on Further and Higher Education said::“Despite a number of strategies and initiatives it is hugely disappointing that there has been no increase in the low number of women and girls (7.8 per cent) employed in STEM careers since 2008.“The failure to attract women to careers in STEM has helped create a skills shortage in business and research.“The Matrix 'Women in STEM' report has called for the establishment of a cross-departmental working group on STEM to be led by the Department for Economy to develop by year-end a STEM action plan. "I have written to the Permanent Secretary of the Department for the Economy to support this call to help address the STEM skills shortage."I will also be writing to the Permanent Secretaries of all department to request that if such a group were established their departments would support it and fully participate."
