Investment needed to support fishing fleet at Ardglass
Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said investment is needed to support the fishing fleet at Ardglass.
Martina Anderson MEP said:
"I met with those involved in the fishing industry in Ardglass alongside my party colleagues Chris Hazzard MP and Emma Rogan MLA to discuss their concerns about the future of the sector.
"It is clear that Ardglass is in need of investment to help develop the fishing industry and to bring it into line with nearby harbours like Kilkeel.
"In particular, boat maintenance facilities need to be put in place in Ardglass to help repair and maintain vessels to ensure the long term future of the fleet of mainly wooden vessels which are at risk from gribble worms.
"There is also a need or a slipway at Ardglass and for improvements to the harbour buildings, including the potential creation of a harbour hub which would not only provide employment but also strengthen the local community.
"I will continue to engage with the fishing community at Ardglass as well as raising their concerns in Europe to support the redevelopment of the fishing village."
