Housing inequalities must be tackled - Ni Chuilin

29 May, 2018 - by Carál Ní Chuilín

Sinn Féin MLA Carál Ní Chuilín has criticised the failure of public bodies to address housing inequalities.

The party’s housing spokesperson said:

“Today I attended the All-Party Group (APG) on housing along with the Department for Communities and the Housing Executive.

"It was clear that these agencies are not targeting resources where need is greatest.

"Areas with the highest level of housing stress aren't being prioritised when it comes to purchasing land or building homes.

"The Housing Executive has cited in the past the need for 'community cohesion' as a pretext for not building homes in certain areas where Catholics are likely to make up the majority of occupants.

“Sinn Féin will be meeting with the Equality Commission, the Housing Executive and the Department for Communities to demand that these inequalities are tackled."
