vCJD Blood Ban to be reassessed - Ó Donnghaile
Sinn Féin Senator Niall Ó Donnghaile has welcomed today’s news that the Irish Blood Transfusion Service (IBTS) are considering a reassessment of the blood ban which prohibits people who were resident in the North or Britain during the vCJD crisis from donating blood in the South.
The news cane during a Commencement Matter on the issue being submitted by Senator Niall Ó Donnghaile today.
Speaking from Leinster House today Niall Ó Donnghaile said:
“There is no doubt that in order to protect the blood supply the Government and IBTS must adhere to the strictest of scientific guidelines when assessing this matter; but given the passage of time since the vCJD crisis and the demonstrable need for additional blood donations, this issue of course warrants a reassessment.
"I welcome news that the Board of the IBTS are to reassess the matter this July and I hope we can work collaboratively to ensure this people in the 26 Counties who want to donate blood will no longer be prohibited from doing so in an environment that is safe for all and based on the medical research by the IBTS.
"Sinn Féin will monitor this situation post July and continue to work with colleagues in order to ensure that ultimately we can lift this ban in a considered and responsible way.” CRÍOCH
