Hargey welcomes Court ruling to quash tower block proposal
Sinn Féin Councillor Deirdre Hargey has welcomed a High Court ruling to formally quash Belfast City Council’s approval for a tower block to be built next to residential homes in the Market area despite the land having been zoned for social housing.
Commenting after today’s judgement, Cllr. Hargey said: “This verdict makes it clear that is not good enough for Belfast City Council to grant planning permission for a tower block bigger than the Europa on a site zoned for social housing.
“I welcome that Judge McCloskey has ordered Belfast City Council to cover all legal fees of the case brought forward by the Market residents.
“It’s clear from this judgement that the rights and needs of the residents of the Market were not taken into consideration when this planning permission was granted and that Belfast City Council have acted unlawfully and without full information.
“This needs to act as a wake-up call to local authorities and Belfast City Council that they must adhere to law and have all the information in order to act in the best interest of the citizens.
“In the absence of this we are left with cases like this where the tax payer is forced to pick up the tab.”
