‘Recall inquiry must be robust’ - Sheehan

31 May, 2018 - by Pat Sheehan

Sinn Féin Health spokesperson Pat Sheehan MLA has reiterated a call for the inquiry into the recall of neurology patients in the Belfast Trust area to be robust and to begin work immediately.

The West Belfast MLA was speaking after attending a cross-party briefing on the issue along with Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Carers Colm Gildernew MLA.

Pat Sheehan said: "We need the independent inquiry panel to be robust in looking into all concerns and complaints relating to Dr Watt prior to December 2016 in establishing whether this recall could have been avoided.

"The inquiry panel was announced by the Department of Health on May 10th and now needs to publish its terms of reference and begin its work.

"While it is clear there is a lot of activity in relation to the Belfast Trust's recall of neurology patients, we continue to press the department to ensure all is being done to discover what has led to this situation.”

Colm Gildernew added: "The recall affecting neurology patients is also having an impact on many carers across the north.

"Today we requested that the department include the Carers sector and Carer representatives in their engagement with charities on the neurology recall.

"We will continue to seek assurances from the Department that affected patients get the attention and support that they need.

"I would also encourage any affected neurology patient that has not yet made an appointment for review with the Belfast Trust to do so."
