Fearon urges support for Equality demos

1 June, 2018 - by Megan Fearon

Sinn Féin Equality Spokesperson Megan Fearon is urging people to show their support for the LGBT community at a series of events taking place this weekend.

The Newry Armagh MLA will address the first ever Trans-Pride rally for gender Equality in Belfast on Saturday while Marriage Equality demonstrations will also be taking place in Belfast and Derry on the same day.

She commented: “Sinn Féin is a party committed to the equality agenda. We believe that all citizens regardless of race, religion, sexuality or gender should be treated as equals so I would encourage the public to come along in numbers and support all these events.

“The rights of the LGB and T communities and human rights are not separate; they are one and the same but homophobia and transphobia are still significant problems in this society.

“It’s important that we show solidarity with the LGBT community on Saturday and every day and send a clear message that inequality and discrimination of any kind is simply not tolerable.”

NOTES TO EDITORS: Megan Fearon will be speaking at the Rally for Gender Equality, 12:30-1:30pm, Writers Square, Belfast. The Marriage Equality demonstrations will begin simultaneously at 2:30pm in Writers Square and Guildhall Square, Derry.
