Belfast equality march sends powerful message on rights for all – O’Neill
Commenting after today’s Love Equality march and rally in Belfast in support of marriage equality Sinn Féin Deputy Leader Michelle O’Neill said:
“Thousands of people have come on to the streets once again for their rights.
“Today’s march was about marriage equality, it is about two people who love each other being able to get married.
“But the message today was also loud and clear on a range of rights issues as the organisers sent solidarity to others in society who are being denied their rights by the DUP with support from the Tory government.
“The solidarity message is very clear to Irish language speakers, the victims of institutional abuse and victims of the conflict and to women campaigning for appropriate and compassionate healthcare services.
“This was very much a rally for equality and rights for all, for a modern society, for an inclusive society and Sinn Féin is very proud to march with them and campaign for the delivery of those rights.
“Sinn Féin wants a local assembly to make decisions on the implementation of these rights.
“There can be no party with a veto, there can be no party allowed to deny rights for anyone in society.
“In the absence of an Executive and assembly we have called for the convening of the British Irish intergovernmental conference because the two governments have responsibility for the equivalence of rights.”
