O’Neill welcomes news that online registration of voters to go live

3 June, 2018 - by Michelle O'Neill

Sinn Féin Deputy Leader Michelle O’Neill has welcomed news that online registration of voters in the north will go live on June 18.

Michelle O’Neill said:

“I welcome confirmation from the Electoral Office that online registration for voters in the north will be available from June 18.

“The online registration service will be available at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote and the process should take under five minutes.

“Online registration was introduced in Britain a number of years ago and it is Sinn Féin’s view there was an unjustifiable delay in extending it to the north.

“I want to commend the efforts of Francie Molloy MP and Colm Gildernew MLA in lobbying to end the delay in rolling out the scheme in the north.

“This will go some way to addressing the democratic deficit which exists here as tens of thousands of people were taken off the electoral register over recent years.

“The Electoral Office has a responsibility to make it more accessible for people to exercise their hard-won right to vote.

“Sinn Féin is calling on the Electoral Office to also reinstate the schools registration programme which has the potential to get 10,000 young people per year on to the electoral register.”
