Government must hold Britain to June summit deadline – Cullinane
Sinn Féin spokesperson for Brexit David Cullinane TD said today that the June EU summit must produce results for the island of Ireland, and that the British government must not be allowed to dither any longer.
Deputy Cullinane said:
“The news that Theresa May’s Brexit blueprint will not be ready for the June EU summit is of no surprise to anybody.
“The British government has been allowed to produce soundbite after soundbite in lieu of actual plans.
“The Irish government has indulged this behaviour, allowing the December joint statement to be portrayed as a cast-iron guarantee, and the March agreement as a done deal.
“The facts on the ground say otherwise.
“These talks are now entering a crunch phase. The Irish Government must no longer accept political fudges.
“They must insist on an agreed legal framework that avoids any hardening of the border, that protects the GFA in all its parts, and protects citizens’ rights.
“This is best achieved by the North remaining in the political and legal framework of the EU.”
