Sinn Féin publish Suicide Prevention & Training Bill – Pat Buckley TD
Sinn Féin spokesperson on Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Pat Buckley TD has today launched Sinn Féin’s Suicide Prevention & Training Bill.
Speaking today, Deputy Buckley said;
“Our aim with this legislation is to put a statutory requirement on public service bodies and Government Departments to provide basic suicide prevention training to all front-line staff of a public service body or Government Department who are required to engage regularly with members of the public as part of their work.
“We want to plan for the future, and Ireland is facing a crisis in mental health services that can be addressed if the proper resources are put in place.
“This Bill will allow those who have not already received suicide prevention training, equivalent training or training of a higher level to avail of the service.
“In this year alone, there were 70 school going children have died by suicide. That figure excludes 16-18-year olds who are school goers.
"This is reality. The days of sweeping it under the carpet have to go.
“The least we can do to tackle this crisis across the island is bring in some form of suicide prevention training and roll it out through public service bodies and Government Departments.”
