Planning change for farmers welcomed

1 September, 2005

Sinn Féin Agricultural and Rural Development Spokesperson, Michelle Gildernew MP MLA has this morning welcomed the decision by Direct Rule Minister Jeff Rooker to increase the 'permitted development' rights and planning controls on storage for farm slurry.

Ms Gildernew said:

"In a meeting which Sinn Féin held with Minister Rooker we pressed the urgency in making this decision, it will allow farmers who wish to avail of the Waste Management Scheme to press ahead and not be held back by unnecessary planning consent.

"Planning service has been responsible for unreasonable delays in planning consent for many projects which are trying to create jobs in rural areas, and in some cases money committed to projects has and will be lost, in this instance a united voice across the rural community has delivered a sensible outcome.

"Given the current severe financial hardship that many farmers are facing, this decision should help farmers clarify whether they will commit scarce resources to waste management." ENDS
