British need to get real on backstop - David Cullinane TD
Sinn Féin spokesperson for Brexit, David Cullinane TD said today that the Brexit backstop cannot be time-limited; it must protect the Good Friday Agreement in all its parts; and the Irish government cannot accept anything less.
Deputy Cullinane said:
"The British proposals for a backstop arrangement fall far short if what is required.
"The backstop cannot be time-limited as it is supposed to apply in the absence of an agreement, not just in a delay in an agreement.
"All that the British government has put forward today is an extension of the implementation period. That is not good enough.
"The Irish government must ensure that the backstop is an actual backstop - that is a legal agreement to ensure there is no hardening of the border on the island of Ireland, and one that protects the Good Friday Agreement in all its parts.
"The EU Summit in June cannot become another 'kicking the can down the road' exercise.
"The people of Ireland will not stand for that and we need legal certainty behind the political guarantees.
"That is the only basis on which this process can move forward."
