Focus must be on patients in Fermanagh Recall – Gildernew

7 June, 2018 - by Colm Gildernew

Sinn Féin MLA Colm Gildernew said today he has been made aware that the Western Trust has recalled 37 patients suffering from a heart condition, aortic stenosis, after reviewing the files of patients.

The recall has been triggered by concerns relating to two patients earlier this year.

Colm Gildernew said:

“The Western Trust has written to 37 patients suffering from the heart condition, which is the most common type of heart valve disease in the elderly.

“The concerns are centred on the follow-up care and the monitoring of patients.

“The Trust have reviewed the files of patients suffering from the condition in the Fermanagh area and have decided to recall a total of 37 patients.

“These reviews need to be carried out as quickly as possible and the Trust need to communicate in a full and transparent manner with the patients and their families.

“The well-being of patients must be the primary focus in the days ahead and the circumstances surrounding the recall must be thoroughly investigated and communicated to the public.”
