International community must do more to end refugee crisis - Boyle
Sinn Féin MLA Michaela Boyle has said the international community must do more to end the ongoing and growing refugee crisis across the world.
Speaking on World Refugee Day, the party's spokesperson on Ethnic Minorities said:
“Thousands of people are displaced every day by the horrors of war, persecution and poverty.
“A damning report by the United Nations recently highlighted that the number of displaced people around the world reached a record high of 68.5 million in 2017.
“Just last week, a rescue ship carrying more than 600 refugees including men, women and children was refused to dock in Italy by far-right, Interior Minister, Salvini.
“The world can no longer stand idly by. The international community must do much more to eradicate the humanitarian crisis and end conflicts through genuine negotiation,
military solutions which inflict more pain and suffering are not the answer.
“On World Refugee Day, I am making a direct call to the British and Irish governments to safely relocate and resettle more refugees and immediately end direct provision.”
