Fearon condemns ‘coordinated attacks’ on Republican memorials
Newry and Armagh Sinn Féin MLA Megan Fearon has described a series of attacks on 1981 Hunger Strike Memorials as despicable and outrageous.
The attacks took place overnight at 1981 Hunger Strike memorials at Ford’s Cross Silverbridge, Meigh Village and on the Newry A1 Bypass.
The south Armagh MLA said:
“These outrageous attacks are clearly coordinated. They are a deliberate attempt to insult and antagonise local people who respect and cherish the memory of the 1981 hungers strikers.
“All memorials should be treated with dignity and respect and should not be targeted in this way.
“I have no doubt that the Republican community here will rise to the occasion and restore the monuments.
“The desecration of any memorial or monument to the dead is despicable and these attacks should be roundly condemned by all.”
