Minister Murphy must release May homeless figures this week - Eoin Ó Broin TD
Sinn Féin Housing spokesperson Eoin Ó Broin TD has called on Minister Murphy to release the monthly homeless figures for May this week without delay.
The Dublin Mid-West TD said:
“There can be no delay in the publication of the homeless figures for May. Unfortunately the April figures showed an increase in the number of homeless children and also saw 297 people removed from the figures in Dublin City and Meath.
“I hope for the third month in a row the Minister will not manipulate the figures without providing us with any evidence as to why he is removing adults and children from the official figures.
“Under questioning at the Housing Committee last week we didn’t get a straight answer from the Minister.
“Homeless experts will be appearing at the Committee this Thursday morning and I hope they will be able to provide more information than the Minister with responsibility for this issue did.
“The Department of Housing cannot continue to edit the figures due to alleged miscategorisations without providing us with any hard evidence as to why Minister Murphy felt the need to do so.
“If the Minister is making moves to change the definition of homelessness in order to reduce the monthly figures then he must outline this to the Housing Committee so he can be robustly challenged.
“I say every month that I sincerely hope the figures are down. However we know that the government’s current policy isn’t working and that the precarious nature of the private rented sector is pushing more and more people to seek help from homeless services.
“To see a true reduction in the need for households to present as homeless we need to do more to keep people in their homes."
